A Message of Gratitude and a Call to Action from Justice for Nature
On July 31st, we mark World Ranger Day – a day to honor those who stand on the frontlines of nature protection. This global initiative, led by the International Ranger Federation (IRF), commemorates the rangers who have died or been injured in the line of duty and celebrates the invaluable role rangers play in safeguarding the natural and cultural heritage of our planet.
🌿 Why Rangers Are Indispensable
Rangers – whether professionals, volunteers, local people or members of Indigenous communities – are the backbone of wilderness and biodiversity conservation. Their work includes:
✦ Protecting endangered species
✦ Patrolling and safeguarding protected areas
✦ Combating poaching, illegal logging and environmental crime
✦ Educating the public and promoting sustainable development
✦ Mitigating human–wildlife conflict
Every day, rangers face serious risks – from poor working conditions to violence and physical danger. Yet without their bravery and commitment, we would lose entire ecosystems and the very foundation of life on Earth.
🛡️ Our Role as IRF Members
As proud members of the International Ranger Federation, we share common goals:
✦ Promoting professionalization and capacity building
✦ Supporting knowledge exchange and peer learning
✦ Participating in global conservation projects
✦ Raising awareness about the role of rangers in conservation
Thanks to IRF, we are part of a global network of over 160 ranger associations and can effectively contribute to improving working conditions for rangers worldwide.
📈 Where We're Headed – and Why We Need Help
Today, there are around 286,000 active rangers worldwide. But to truly protect 30% of Earth’s land and seas by 2030 (the global 30×30 goal), we need at least 1.5 million well-trained, well-equipped and supported rangers.
In the past year alone, 174 rangers died while on duty, including 49 who were killed by violence. That’s why we support training, equipment, exchange programs and safety standards such as the Ranger Code of Conduct.
